Search Tips

The search engine permits text string searches. Words belonging together must be enclosed by double quotation marks. For example, if you enter "Albert Einstein" you will find find documents that contain the words Albert Einstein. If you enter "Lise Meitner" Physics, you will find documents containing the words Lise Meitner and physics. If you enter "Marie Curie" "Henri Becquerel" you will find documents containing both Marie Curie and Henri Becquerel.

As the search engine results are weighted it is faster to enter more rather than rather fewer words describing what you are looking for.

You can also limit your search to particular web pages by using the advanced search facility. For example entering "press releases" in the "only URLs which contain" field will limit the search to pages from the Press Office.

You can also exclude WWW sites by using the "no URLs which contain" field, e.g. if you do not want to search the central university WWW server, then enter http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de in this field.

The search engine for URLs is case sensitive, i.e. "Press Office" is different than "press office".

Note that the following words and characters are reserved as logical operators:

and
or
not
(
)

The following type of expressions are permitted:
  cat and dog not bird
  (case and coal) or (politics and morality)
The following type of expression is not permitted:
  cat and not bird
because two logical operators follow each other.
